Maria Van Holland's path from the sunny streets of Sevilla, Spain to becoming a Production Manager at Idaho Milk Products showcases a remarkable journey of adaptation, growth, and leadership. Her path is one defined by cultural leaps, professional milestones, and a deep sense of purpose in her work.
Spanish Roots
Born and raised in southern Spain, Maria grew up in a traditional Spanish family with three siblings. Her father worked as an engineer and her mother as a nurse, providing a stable foundation for her upbringing. Like many young people in Spain, Maria loved soccer. She played as a forward for local teams. She also supported her hometown club, Sevilla FC.
The American Adventure Begins
However, Maria’s life took a transformative turn when a friend casually mentioned the possibility of applying for soccer scholarships in the United States. Intrigued by the opportunity to improve her English—a valuable skill in Spain—Maria decided to take the leap. This decision marked a significant departure from the norm, as young adults in Spain typically live with their parents until around the age of 30. It was a bold move that would set the stage for her future.
"It was a cultural shock," Maria recalls her early days in America. Maria earned a soccer scholarship to Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri, and arrived in a world that was vastly different from the one she knew. The cultural adjustment was challenging, but Maria embraced independence with determination. She insisted her parents stop sending money and took on the responsibility of supporting herself through college by managing a Mexican restaurant. During this time, she pursued a degree in Business Management, all while excelling on the soccer field. It was at Missouri Valley College that she also met Taylor, the special woman who would later become her wife.
After graduation, Maria began her professional career, overseeing a production line of about 50 employees in the manufacturing of frozen meals. This role was her first real foray into leadership, laying the groundwork for her future in production management.
Finding Idaho Milk Products
When Taylor, who is from Idaho, wanted to move closer to family, Maria, ready for the next adventure, made the transition with her. Taylor's family, who worked in the dairy industry, recommended Idaho Milk Products as a great place to work. This recommendation led Maria to apply, and it became her professional home.
Maria started at Idaho Milk Products as a Management Trainee, learning the entire dairy protein production process from the ground up. Her initiative and problem-solving skills quickly became apparent when she stepped up to help with issues on a new packaging line. This led to her becoming a Packaging Supervisor and eventually the Production Supervisor Vacation Relief.
Growth into Production Management
It was the intricacies of the production process that captivated Maria. "The way we make our product is really interesting,” she explains. “There’s a lot of chemistry, a lot of science behind it… There’s always something new to learn.”
This enthusiasm did not go unnoticed. After serving as a Production Supervisor on Vacation Leave, Maria was promoted to Production Manager, a position she has held for the past three years. In this role, she oversees approximately 40 people and has worked to empower her team by giving supervisors more authority and knowledge to handle situations independently. This approach has fostered both confidence and efficiency within her team.
Leadership Philosophy
Maria's leadership style has evolved over time. Initially prone to internal panic when problems arose, she credits mentor late Dave Anderson, former Vice President of Operations at Idaho Milk Products, with teaching her a valuable lesson: "There's always going to be issues... It's just better to sit down, relax, check what is going on and see what your options are, and then go from there."
Rather than adhering to a single leadership approach, Maria draws from different styles. She believes in leading by example, often stepping onto the production floor to work alongside her team members. She believes in "show and tell" and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty alongside her team on the production floor. She finds this approach not only builds trust but also ensures that she remains deeply connected to the day-to-day operations.
Making an Impact Through Food
For Maria, the most fulfilling aspect of her work is understanding the global impact of the products her team helps create. "We are making food. It's going to go to our babies, it is going to go to people that are in the hospital. There's a big impact on what we're making, and the way that we're making it."
Maria Van Holland's journey from soccer-playing Spanish student to dairy production expert exemplifies how embracing challenges and continuous learning can lead to a fulfilling career—even in an industry and location one might never have imagined.
