Rethinking What Customer Service Means in Dairy Manufacturing

At Idaho Milk Products, Director of Customer Service Robert Magambo sees his job as much more than answering phones or tracking packages. He views customer service as the bridge that connects sales, logistics, and plant operations into a single, reliable engine.

Moving Beyond the Help Desk

Getting orders filled on time, in full, and at a good price is just table stakes for Robert. Shortly after joining Idaho Milk Products, he set out to rebuild his department into a true partner for the sales team and a core part of how the business operates.

His approach comes down to a simple goal: every single interaction should leave customers feeling like Idaho Milk Products is the easiest and most dependable supplier they deal with. That means his team stays closely involved in scheduling, shipping, and order planning rather than just stepping in when an email pops up.

Learning the Science Behind the Ingredients

Robert brought nearly thirty years of logistics experience to the role, but most of it was in the meat industry. Moving into dairy meant taking on a steep learning curve.

Based in Jerome County, Idaho, one of the world's highest-volume milk-producing areas, Idaho Milk Products relies on complex processing to produce custom milk protein concentrates and specialty milk powders, including IdaPro 1090 and IdaPlus. Plant operators spend their days running precise calculations to achieve exact protein percentages, such as 85% or 90%.

Robert’s team acts as the translator between those technical plant operations and the buyers on the other end. They take complicated production realities and turn them into clear, honest commitments for food manufacturers who depend on tight delivery windows.

Staying Ahead of Global Disruptions

Shipping directly out of Jerome to customers across the United States, Europe, Asia, Brazil, and Israel means global events directly impact daily work.

When ocean vessel schedules shift unexpectedly or international trade rules tighten, Robert’s team uses real-time tracking tools to keep eyes on shipping containers across the globe. Robert also keeps a close eye on world news to spot potential supply chain snags before they cause delays, helping customers plan around disruptions rather than react to them.

Taking Charge of the Shipping Process

One of Robert’s biggest priorities is helping the company think bigger about shipping. Historically, many buyers arranged their own freight pickups, which often led to unpredictable pickup dates and delayed revenue.

He is working to change that dynamic by having Idaho Milk Products take control of outbound transportation:

  • Managing shipments directly to guarantee firmer delivery dates.
  • Dialing in accurate lead times from the processing line all the way to the final destination.
  • Trimming delays between when an order is placed and when it arrives.

Finding Purpose in the Supply Chain

The ingredients made at Idaho Milk Products end up in everything from baby formula to adult nutrition drinks and protein snacks. Looking ahead, Robert is excited about expanding into new areas like ice cream ingredients.

While exporting liquid mix requires specialized refrigerated containers, dry ice cream mix opens up even broader possibilities. Because dry mix doesn't need cold storage during transit, it could help bring ice cream to regions with limited power grids—a project Robert loves because it pairs clever logistics with a meaningful community impact.

Leading with Purpose

Since taking on the role, Robert has focused on building a strong, dependable team while keeping a grounded approach to leadership. Guided by his personal motto, "love kindness, do justice, and be humble," he believes the best leaders stay curious, work hard, and put people first.

Under his direction, customer service at Idaho Milk Products has evolved from a simple support function into a thoughtful, global operation that keeps supply chains moving smoothly.
